Fraud

The Jefferson City Police Department is currently investigating a counterfeting scheme that has made its way to Jefferson City. A black female and male couple have been passing high quality counterfiet American Express Travels checks in the amount of $500 at various local businesses. The name that appeared on the checks in the past was Sonja Harris.

The female is described as approximately 5'5" tall, 140 lbs with straighten hair or wearing a wig or extensions. The male is described as 5'10" to 6', medium build with a mustache and goatee.

According to American Express, they sell very few travelers checks in the amount of $500 or $1,000. So the odds are high that any travelers checks in those amounts are counterfeit.

There is a quick check that businesses can use to check for counterfeit checks as follows.

1.) Check for a watermark on the paper by holding it up to the light. If the watermark is there, turn the check over so it is back side up.

2) Rub a moist finger across the RIGHT denomination designation. The printing should NOT smudge or smear.

3) Then rub a moist a moist finger across the LEFT denomination designation. This printing SHOULD smudge or smear. If the travelers check does not pass ALL of these quick tests it is counterfeit.

Jefferson City Area Crimestoppers is offering a $250 reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
